Students find passion, friendship among hundreds of clubs, activities Finding a place to meet friends and be creative is one key to happiness at Arizona State University, and among the more than 1,000 clubs and organizations are several dozen related to playing an instrument or singing. Among those are five different groups who sing a cappella. Adriana Whitmore has 5 been singing since age 9 and was in the Chicago Children's Choir and Voice of Chicago. She knew she wanted to continue singing when she got to ASU but wasn't sure how, until she saw the all-female Pitchforks group perform at the ASU Welcome for incoming freshmen1 last week. "I saw them and fell in love and I had to try out," said Whitmore, who admitted to being a 10 little nervous about the audition. Hundreds of students attended the a cappella auditions held at the Music Building over several days this past week. Research has found that students who make connections and are involved in university life are more likely to stay in school and graduate, according to Kendra Hunter, senior 15 associate dean2 of students. "It's critical for students to be involved and to get that sense of belonging by contributing to a community and feeling that sense of pride," she said. Hunter said that freshmen are still discovering their interests and can be involved in several different activities. 20 "Whatever it is that students are interested in, if there's not a club or organization that's in existence, they can create their own," Hunter said. London's Cabbies Say 'The Knowledge' Is Better Than Uber And A GPS Getting into the back of a black taxi is the quintessential London experience. Name any spot in Britain's capital and the driver knows exactly where to go and how to get there as fast as possible. This is "The Knowledge." Every cabbie must master it, and it takes years to learn.
For 150 years, drivers have known all the city's streets by memory and passed tests requiring years of study. Now it just takes Uber and a GPS to get around — and this has unleashed a major battle that pits a London tradition against a company challenging the taxi industry worldwide. Brian Nayar, a Knowledge instructor, is worried. He says that Uber is hurting the industry he loves.
"There are companies, you mention Uber, where as far as I'm concerned, they're circumventing the law," he says. Taxi associations contend that Uber's online car-booking app is the same as a meter and is cheating the system. If you drive a car with a meter in London, then you have to have passed The Knowledge exams and hold a special license.
As the battle continues, London taxi drivers say Uber is undermining an important British tradition dating back to 1865. On average, it takes more than three years to learn The Knowledge. Aspiring taxi drivers start the journey at places like the West London Knowledge School, one of several teaching programs in the capital.
First, they flit around the city on mopeds1, learning the streets, and then spend months in rooms hunched over large, laminated maps. They draw routes with marker pens and then close their eyes and call out directions from the image in their mind. They're building a mental map that will help them pass stiff tests and get the coveted green badge to allow them to drive a metered black taxi.
For Nayar, it's all part of a great British tradition that is more meaningful than simply relying on technology for navigation. "I drive a London taxi, but I'm also an ambassador for this great city, and you can't get that from a GPS," he says...

Taking a cab in London is a typically English experience because it has been a tradition since 1865. It is part of visiting London just like visiting the monuments. (l. 15 "tradition dating back to 1865). Document B
    Southampton, England, April 10, 1912
Helen Walsh was a short, slight woman with a permanent air of dissatisfaction about her. She fussed around her son now, brushing flecks of dust from his trousers andstray hairs from the shoulders of his jacket. He smiled at her, glad of the attention she paid to him and pleased to see the unmistakable look of pride on her face, pride in the fact that 5 her son was to work as a steward on Titanic's maiden voyage from Southampton to New York.
"Not bad, love, not bad at all... for a Walsh," she replied, tugging at his waistcoat to remove a slight pucker1 and pulling at his cap to straighten it. "Now, you remember to work hard, Harry Daniel Walsh," she chided, "and mind that you look after those third-class 10 passengers just the same as you would any of those wealthy Americans. The poor might not have the hats and the fancy shoes, but they deserve to be treated good 'n' proper, you hear?"
With her family roots set deep within the working-class society of Southampton's docks, Helen Walsh had no time at all for the stuck-up American millionaires and socialites2 15 who, it was believed, had chosen to sail on Titanic to make business contacts or to give them something to boast about at one of their dinner parties. Nevertheless, her background didn't prevent her from being a proud mother, and she was absolutely delighted that her son was going to be one of the three hundred stewards who would work on this much-talked-about ship, taking great pleasure in telling all her friends and 20 neighbors about it. And although the gossip-loving, spying-on-the-neighbors part of her would have quite liked to know exactly how ostentatious the first-class accommodations were, she was especially pleased that Harry had been assigned to steerage class, to look after people like themselves.
Despite his mother's obvious delight that it would be Titanic that he would sail on.

Document A The day I decided to embark on a cross country road trip, I was almost immediately greeted by support by my husband and my best friends with whom I shared the plan. To those who knew me well, sure, it seemed borderline radical, but not at all out of character. I had set off on trips before to Europe, Mexico and all around the South. Fact is, I was born with wanderlust1 5 in my veins. Must have inherited it from all my ancestors three generations ago who endured long boat rides across the Atlantic Ocean to start a new life in America.
A lot of people have asked me why I'm traveling by myself across the country. Why not take my best friend? Why not wait until my husband could go with me? What 10 about one of my sisters? The answer is simple and yet complex. I wanted time to myself. I wanted an adventure for myself. I wanted a trip that was wholly mine. I wanted empty two lane highways through Arkansas and random sightseeing in Kansas. I wanted to give into my wanderlust and just go and see. By myself. Traveling across the country is something I've wanted to do again after my aunt and I 15 drove from Pittsburgh to Seattle over three and a half days in 2010. Before then, I didn't understand how vast this country is. Sure, traveled the East coast more times than I could count, but that didn't compare to the emptiness of Iowa, the jagged mountains of Wyoming and Montana where I fell in love with everything I saw around me.

Document A It was 1910, then, and the twenty-fifth anniversary of my coming was near at hand. Thoughts of the past filled me with mixed joy and sadness. I was overcome with a desire to celebrate the day. But with whom? Usually this is done by "ship brothers," as East-Siders call fellow immigrants who arrive here on the same boat. It came back to me that I had such a ship 5 brother, and that it was Gitelson. Poor Gitelson! He was still working at his trade. I had not seen him for years, but I had heard of him from time to time, and I knew that he was employed by a ladies' tailor at custom work somewhere in Brooklyn. (The custom-tailoring shop he had once started for himself had proved a failure.) Also, I knew how to reach a brother-in-law of his. The upshot was that I made an appointment with Gitelson for him to be 10 at my office on the great day at 12 o'clock, I did so without specifying the object of the meeting, but I expected that he would know (...)

    A.1.
B.People who live in gated communities intend to feel more secure in terms of urban violence, privacy and peer identity. They want to leave with people from the same social background.
    C. In fact, living in a gated community is probably safer but it also increases violence because social class can't mix up anymore, the poor remain together. There is no social diversity. D.
Living in a gated community is utopian. That is why there is a distinction between being on holidays or living every day in a gated community. It cuts rich people from reality, from civic responsibility, from cultural exchange. And it probably makes poor people feel even more excluded. Attention toutefois, il s'agit bien d'une proposition de corrigé et pas d'un corrigé officiel...
